Why SCORM exists

Before SCORM, every LMS used its own proprietary format. Course content created for Platform A couldn't be used on Platform B. SCORM created a universal standard — like USB for e-learning. Create content once, deploy it anywhere that supports SCORM.

SCORM versions

• SCORM 1.2 (2001) — the most widely supported version. Handles basic content packaging, lesson sequencing, and learner tracking (completion status, quiz scores, time spent).
• Works with virtually every LMS. SCORM 2004 — added sequencing rules (force students to complete lessons in order), improved reporting, and better multi-SCO (learning object) communication. Less universally supported than 1.2. xAPI (Tin Can API) — the modern successor to SCORM. Tracks learning beyond the LMS (mobile apps, simulations, real-world activities). More powerful but requires additional infrastructure (Learning Record Store).

When SCORM matters for Indian coaches

• Corporate training contracts — if you sell courses to companies, their LMS (SAP SuccessFactors, Cornerstone, Moodle) likely requires SCORM-packaged content.
• Government and institutional sales — many government training portals mandate SCORM compliance for vendor content.
• Platform migration — SCORM content can be exported from one LMS and imported to another, protecting your investment in content creation.

When SCORM doesn't matter

If you're an individual coach selling directly to students (not through corporate LMS), SCORM compliance is rarely relevant. Your students access courses through your platform's player — they don't need SCORM packaging. Most modern course platforms (Skolasti, Teachable, Kajabi) use their own content management rather than SCORM because it offers a better student experience.

SCORM limitations

Designed in 2001 — the standard predates smartphones, mobile learning, video-first content, and AI. SCORM content is typically HTML-based (text, quizzes, basic interactions) rather than the video-heavy courses popular today. The packaging format adds technical overhead without clear benefit for direct-to-student course sales.
